Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup (120ml) buttermilk (or milk + 1 teaspoon vinegar)
  • ¼ cup (60ml) unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease the donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, egg, buttermilk, applesauce, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients using a rubber spatula until just combined.
  5. Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about ¾ full.
  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the donuts are golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Allow donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  8. In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon for the topping.
  9. Brush warm donuts with melted butter and dip each donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
  10. Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container for later.
