Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup (120ml) buttermilk (or milk + 1 teaspoon vinegar)
- ¼ cup (60ml) unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for topping)
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease the donut pan.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, egg, buttermilk, applesauce, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth.
- Gently fold the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients using a rubber spatula until just combined.
- Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each cavity about ¾ full.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until the donuts are golden brown and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Allow donuts to cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
- In a small bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon for the topping.
- Brush warm donuts with melted butter and dip each donut in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
- Enjoy immediately or store in an airtight container for later.
