  • Granulated sugar: 2 cups (400g)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: ¾ cup (75g)
  • Baking powder: 1 ½ teaspoons (7.5ml)
  • Baking soda: 1 ½ teaspoons (7.5ml)
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon (5ml)
  • Large eggs: 2
  • Buttermilk: 1 cup (240ml)
  • Vegetable oil: ½ cup (120ml)
  • Vanilla extract: 2 teaspoons (10ml)
  • Boiling water: 1 cup (240ml)
  • Unsalted butter: 1 cup (226g), softened
  • Powdered sugar: 4 cups (480g)
  • Heavy cream: ¼ cup (60ml)
  • Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon (5ml)
  • Gel food coloring: Midnight Blue (as needed for desired shade)
  • Edible silver luster dust
  • Edible silver sprinkles
  • Edible silver dragees
  • Corn syrup (small amount, for adhering decorations)

Instructions:

  1. Grease and flour the cake pans, line bottoms with parchment.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Slowly pour in boiling water, mixing until batter is smooth. Batter will be thin.
  6. Divide batter evenly among pans, bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Beat softened butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, alternating with heavy cream. Mix in vanilla.
  9. Gradually add midnight blue gel food coloring until desired shade is achieved.
  10. If necessary, use a serrated knife to level the cake layers.
  11. Place one cake layer on a serving plate or cake stand. Spread with buttercream. Repeat with remaining layers.
  12. Frost the entire cake with a thin crumb coat. Chill for 30 minutes.
  13. Apply a final, thicker layer of buttercream to the cake. Smooth with an offset spatula.
  14. Lightly brush areas of the cake with corn syrup where you want the silver decorations to adhere.
  15. Use a paintbrush to apply edible silver luster dust to the top and sides of the cake. Sprinkle silver sprinkles and dragees down one side of the cake to create a cascading effect.
  16. Chill the cake for at least 30 minutes before serving.
