Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour (240 g)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed (113 g)
- 1 cup shredded cheese (such as cheddar or a mix) (100 g)
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives (or green onions)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
- Freshly cracked black pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add cold water, mixing until a dough forms; do not overmix.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
- While the dough chills, mix together the cheese, chives, garlic powder, paprika, and pepper in a bowl.
- On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the dough, pressing down lightly to adhere.
- Roll the dough tightly from one long end to the other and slice into 1-inch (2.5 cm) pieces.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Place cheese whirls on a lined baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
