Ingredients:

  • 4 cups day-old bread, cubed (e.g., French or brioche)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cube the day-old bread and place it in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread and gently fold until the bread absorbs the liquid. Stir in raisins.
  5. Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
  6. Pour the soaked bread mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  7. Place the baking dish inside a larger pan filled with hot water to create a water bath.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature with optional toppings.
