Ingredients:
- 4 cups day-old bread, cubed (e.g., French or brioche)
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (optional)
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar (optional)
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Cube the day-old bread and place it in a large mixing bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together milk, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the cubed bread and gently fold until the bread absorbs the liquid. Stir in raisins.
- Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Pour the soaked bread mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Place the baking dish inside a larger pan filled with hot water to create a water bath.
- Bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature with optional toppings.
