Ingredients:

  • 2 teaspoons loose black tea (or 2 bags)
  • 1 star anise
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 2-3 green cardamom pods
  • 1 small cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 double shot of espresso (about 2 ounces)
  • 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or sweetener of choice

Instructions:

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water, loose black tea, star anise, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and black pepper.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the tea mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a separate container.
  4. While the chai is steeping, brew a double shot of espresso.
  5. In the saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat, stirring regularly.
  6. Once warm, use a whisk or frother to create a frothy texture.
  7. Pour the brewed chai into two mugs, filling halfway, and add the double shot of espresso to each mug.
  8. Top with frothed milk, adding sweetener if desired.
  9. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg on top for an extra touch (optional).
