Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons loose black tea (or 2 bags)
- 1 star anise
- 2-3 whole cloves
- 2-3 green cardamom pods
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup water
- 1 double shot of espresso (about 2 ounces)
- 1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
- 2 tablespoons sugar or sweetener of choice
Instructions:
- In a small saucepan, combine water, loose black tea, star anise, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon, and black pepper.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the tea mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a separate container.
- While the chai is steeping, brew a double shot of espresso.
- In the saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat, stirring regularly.
- Once warm, use a whisk or frother to create a frothy texture.
- Pour the brewed chai into two mugs, filling halfway, and add the double shot of espresso to each mug.
- Top with frothed milk, adding sweetener if desired.
- Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg on top for an extra touch (optional).
