Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks/8 ounces/226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3-4 cups (360-480g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) heavy cream (or milk)
  • 2 teaspoons (10ml) pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  2. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Beat until combined after each addition.
  3. Add the heavy cream (or milk), vanilla extract, and salt.
  4. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes, or until the frosting is light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  5. If the frosting is too thick, add a teaspoon of heavy cream (or milk) at a time until you reach the desired consistency. If it's too thin, add a tablespoon of powdered sugar at a time.
  6. If you want a firmer frosting, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 15 minutes before using.
