Ingredients:
- 4 cups (500g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 teaspoon (5g) baking soda
- 1 teaspoon (5g) baking powder
- 1 teaspoon (6g) salt
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 1 ½ cups (360ml) buttermilk
- ¼ cup (60ml) melted unsalted butter, plus more for brushing
- 1 ½ cups (170g) shredded sharp cheddar cheese
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (or lightly grease).
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Stir in shredded cheddar cheese until evenly distributed.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and melted butter.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined. Do not overmix! Dough will be shaggy.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently shape into a round loaf (about 1.5-2 inches thick).
- Place the loaf on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to score a deep cross (X) on the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the loaf is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Brush with melted butter, if desired, for a golden sheen.
