Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle of red wine (e.g., Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon) - 750 mL
  • 1 orange, sliced, plus additional wedges for garnish
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • ¼ cup of honey or to taste (60 mL)
  • 1 cup of water (240 mL)

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, add the red wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, honey, and water.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir gently until the honey has dissolved.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Allow the mixture to cook for about 20 minutes, letting the flavors meld.
  4. Remove from heat and strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to remove spices and fruit.
  5. Serve warm in heatproof mugs, garnished with additional orange wedges and a cinnamon stick if desired.
