Ingredients:

  • 8 slices day-old bread (such as challah, brioche, or white bread), cut into 1-inch cubes (about 200g / 7 oz)
  • 2 large eggs (approx. 100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole or 2%), (120 ml / 4 fl oz)
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream (30 ml / 1 fl oz)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (5 ml / 0.17 fl oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (2 g / 0.07 oz)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (1 g / 0.035 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (25 g / 0.9 oz)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking (30 g / 1 oz)
  • Maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, chocolate sauce, etc.

Instructions:

  1. Cut the bread slices into 1-inch cubes.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream (if using), vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar until well combined.
  3. Place the bread cubes into the shallow dish or pie plate. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring they are evenly coated. Gently press down to help the bread absorb the mixture. Let soak for 2-3 minutes, flipping once.
  4. Melt butter in a large non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  5. Carefully place the soaked bread cubes into the hot skillet, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  6. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the French toast bites from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings.
