Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (approximately 1.3 kg)
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons (14g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) water
- 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
- ½ cup (100g) packed light brown sugar
- ½ cup (50g) rolled oats (not instant)
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 1 ½ cups all purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
- ¼ cup ice water
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, lemon juice, and water. Toss gently to coat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (Chill if kitchen is warm).
- Combine the flour and salt in a bowl, cut in the butter. Gradually add water until dough form. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C)
- If making a crust, roll out on floured surface and place in pie dish. Crimp edges.
- Pour the apple filling into the pie plate.
- Evenly sprinkle the streusel topping over the apples.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. If the topping starts to brown too quickly, loosely tent with foil.
- Let cool slightly before serving this delicious apple streusel.
