Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450 g) ground beef (80% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon (15 g) brown sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, and condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo)

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sprinkle with salt. Cook for 10-15 minutes until soft and golden, stirring occasionally. Add brown sugar and cook for an additional 5 minutes until caramelized.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Divide into 4 equal portions and form into patties, indenting the center slightly to avoid puffing during grilling.
  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat (about 375-400°F / 190-200°C).
  4. Place patties on the grill and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C). During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to melt.
  5. Place hamburger buns cut-side down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and toasted.
  6. Place grilled patties on the bottom halves of the toasted buns, top with caramelized onions, and add any additional toppings.
