Ingredients:

  • 4 slices white bread (such as Texas toast), about 1/2 inch thick
  • 4 ounces (115g) thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 4 ounces (115g) thinly sliced cooked turkey or chicken
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
  • Fruit preserves (such as raspberry or strawberry), for serving (optional)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Spread Dijon mustard evenly on two slices of bread. Layer ham, turkey (or chicken), and Swiss cheese on top. Top with the remaining bread slices to form two sandwiches.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  3. Gently press each sandwich into the batter, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated. Let the excess batter drip off.
  4. Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet, being mindful not to overcrowd.
  5. Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. Reduce heat if browning too quickly.
  6. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a cutting board. Dust with powdered sugar (if using). Cut each sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately with fruit preserves (if using).
