Ingredients:
- 4 slices white bread (such as Texas toast), about 1/2 inch thick
- 4 ounces (115g) thinly sliced cooked ham
- 4 ounces (115g) thinly sliced cooked turkey or chicken
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
- Fruit preserves (such as raspberry or strawberry), for serving (optional)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup (120ml) whole milk
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for frying
Instructions:
- Spread Dijon mustard evenly on two slices of bread. Layer ham, turkey (or chicken), and Swiss cheese on top. Top with the remaining bread slices to form two sandwiches.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Gently press each sandwich into the batter, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated. Let the excess batter drip off.
- Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the skillet, being mindful not to overcrowd.
- Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey. Reduce heat if browning too quickly.
- Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and place them on a cutting board. Dust with powdered sugar (if using). Cut each sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately with fruit preserves (if using).
