Ingredients:

  • Large Container(s): At least 12 inches (30cm) in diameter and 8 inches (20cm) deep, with drainage holes.
  • Potting Mix: High-quality, well-draining potting mix, not garden soil (about 1 cubic foot/28 liters per container).
  • Slow-Release Fertilizer: Granular, balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) - 1 tablespoon (15ml) per container.
  • Lettuce Seeds or Seedlings: Choose your favourite varieties!
  • Water: Tap water, or rainwater if you’re feeling environmentally conscious.

Instructions:

  1. Choose the Right Container: Select a container with adequate drainage. Size matters!
  2. Prepare the Potting Mix: Combine potting mix and slow-release fertilizer thoroughly. Ensure even distribution.
  3. Sow Seeds or Plant Seedlings: Follow seed packet instructions for spacing. Gently plant seedlings to avoid root damage.
  4. Water Thoroughly: Water deeply after planting. Aim for consistently moist, but not soggy, soil.
  5. Provide Adequate Sunlight: Place the container in a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Rotate regularly.
  6. Water Regularly and Consistently: Check soil moisture daily. Water when the top inch is dry.
  7. Harvest Regularly: Cut outer leaves as needed, leaving the inner leaves to continue growing. This is known as a cut-and-come-again method.
