  • 4 all-beef hot dogs (e.g., Nathan's Famous, Hebrew National)
  • 4 hot dog buns (preferably top-split, New England style if available)
  • Water, for boiling
  • Vegetable oil for grilling (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15 ml)
  • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced (approx. 1 cup / 150g)
  • 1/2 cup water (120 ml)
  • 1/4 cup tomato paste (50g)
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (30 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (12g)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (2g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (1g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (pinch)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Spicy brown mustard (e.g., Gulden's)

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a small saucepan. Add diced onion and cook over medium heat until softened and translucent.
  2. Add water, tomato paste, yellow mustard, sugar, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
  3. Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded (about 20 minutes). Adjust seasoning to taste.
  4. Fill a large saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Add hot dogs and cook until heated through (about 5-7 minutes). Optional: Grill for a bit of char!
  5. Steam the buns lightly in the microwave using a damp paper towel or using a steamer basket.
  6. Place a hot dog in each bun. Top generously with onion sauce and spicy brown mustard. Serve immediately and enjoy the hot dog ny style!
