Ingredients:
- 4 all-beef hot dogs (e.g., Nathan's Famous, Hebrew National)
- 4 hot dog buns (preferably top-split, New England style if available)
- Water, for boiling
- Vegetable oil for grilling (optional)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (15 ml)
- 1 large yellow onion, finely diced (approx. 1 cup / 150g)
- 1/2 cup water (120 ml)
- 1/4 cup tomato paste (50g)
- 2 tablespoons yellow mustard (30 ml)
- 1 tablespoon sugar (12g)
- 1 teaspoon paprika (2g)
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (1g)
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (pinch)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Spicy brown mustard (e.g., Gulden's)
Instructions:
- Heat oil in a small saucepan. Add diced onion and cook over medium heat until softened and translucent.
- Add water, tomato paste, yellow mustard, sugar, paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded (about 20 minutes). Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Fill a large saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Add hot dogs and cook until heated through (about 5-7 minutes). Optional: Grill for a bit of char!
- Steam the buns lightly in the microwave using a damp paper towel or using a steamer basket.
- Place a hot dog in each bun. Top generously with onion sauce and spicy brown mustard. Serve immediately and enjoy the hot dog ny style!
