Ingredients:

  • 1 bagel, your choice (everything, plain, sesame) (approximately 100g)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (US) / 15g butter (Metric), unsalted, softened (optional, for toasting)
  • 2 ounces (US) / 57g (Metric) cream cheese, full-fat, softened
  • 1 tablespoon (US) / 15 ml (Metric) milk or cream (optional, for thinning)
  • 1/4 teaspoon (US) / 1.2ml (Metric) lemon juice
  • 3 ounces (US) / 85g (Metric) lox, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 medium tomato, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon (US) / 15 ml (Metric) capers, drained
  • Optional: Fresh dill sprigs, cracked black pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a small bowl, combine softened cream cheese, milk/cream (if using), and lemon juice. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  2. Slice the bagel horizontally. Toast in a toaster or toaster oven until golden brown. Alternatively, lightly butter the cut sides and toast in a frying pan over medium heat until golden.
  3. Spread the prepared schmear generously on both halves of the toasted bagel.
  4. Arrange the lox slices on top of the cream cheese.
  5. Layer the red onion slices, tomato slices, and capers over the lox. Sprinkle with fresh dill (if using) and cracked black pepper.
  6. Serve Immediately. Enjoy your masterpiece!
