Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dark soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili oil (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine dark soy sauce, rice vinegar, and brown sugar.
  2. Place over medium heat and whisk until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, minced ginger, and sesame oil.
  4. Add Chinese five-spice powder, chili oil, and white pepper.
  5. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Remove from heat and let it cool; the sauce will thicken as it cools.
  7. Transfer to an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
