Ingredients:
- 3 large Washington apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 4 cups or 600g)
- 1/2 cup (115g) unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup (150g) packed brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 1/2 cups (190g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
Instructions:
- Peel, core, and slice the Washington apples. Toss apple slices with cinnamon and set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until dissolved, creating a smooth caramel.
- Pour caramel mixture into the base of the cake pan. Arrange apple slices over the caramel in a decorative pattern.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat together granulated sugar, oil, eggs, and vanilla until fluffy.
- Alternate adding dry ingredients and buttermilk to the egg mixture, mixing until combined.
- Pour batter over the arranged apples in the cake pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate. Serve warm or at room temperature.
