Ingredients:
- 6 slices of thick-cut bread (e.g., brioche or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk (480 ml)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50 g)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 medium apples (e.g., Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (28 g)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar (50 g)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- Maple syrup, for serving (optional)
Instructions:
- Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté sliced apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until tender. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
- Layer half of the bread in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Spread the sautéed apples over the bread. Pour half of the custard mixture over the apples, then layer the remaining bread. Pour the remaining custard mixture over the top.
- Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes or until puffed and golden brown.
- Let it cool slightly before slicing. Drizzle with maple syrup before serving.
